Lawrenceville Garden Club was organized in September 1953. In September 1954 it became federated meaning it joined the National Garden Clubs, Inc. and The Garden Clubs of Illinois. The club flower is the red rose; the club tree is the white dogwood and the club colors are red and white.
There are 25 members at this time There are two types of membership - full membership and associate membership. Associate members attend meetings but are not obligated to hostess, serve on committees or hold office. By the same token, associate members do not have voting privileges. Dues for both types of membership are currently $12.00 per year, payable in March.
Over the years the Garden Club has been responsible for plantings at various civic sites. Currently the membership maintains the landscaping at the Court House, at the sign at the east entrance to the city and the sign for the city park and pool. The club also works closely with the Mayor in efforts to promote city beautification. An award of "Garden of the Month" is made beginning in June of each year. In past years certificates have also been awarded to those maintaining or installing landscaping on their property. A National Garden Clubs project, in which the local club participates, is the Blue Star Memorial Highway Program. This program began in 1945 to honor the men and women serving during WWII. US 50 is a Blue Star Highway, and the marker sponsored by the Garden Club, the VFW and the American Legion in 1973 is located at the US 50 entrance to Red Hill State Park.
Club funds are derived from dues and the annual plant sale held in the shelter house at the city park. In years past projects have included the sale of the many pink and white dogwood trees seen around town. Lawrenceville Garden Club is a non-profit organization. Membership is open to anyone interested in gardening or wanting to learn about gardening. Meetings currently are held on the fourth Monday of each month except January at 1:30 p.m. For more information, call Ann Umfleet at 943-3740 or Ellen Brown at 943-2076.
